In 1926, Dutch designer Mart Stam created the first cantilevered chair by bending gas pipes into sharp angles and joining them with elbow fittings. A year later, he partnered with L. & C. Arnold to produce a refined version, crafted from a single 20 mm steel tube reinforced with iron rods for support. Its continuous frame is a fresh interpretation of modern seating design, intentionally modest in form.
