The Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi merges Japanese sensibility with Western technique. Formed from two mirrored sheets of bent plywood joined by a brass rod, the shape reminisces the wings of a butterfly and the torii gates of Shinto shrines. A rare sight in a floor-sitting Japanese culture, this sculptural piece won the 1957 Milan Triennale gold medal.
